DEPARTMENT PROFILE

The department of Basic Science was established in 2008-09. It has FOUR wings:
1. Mathematics , 2. Physics , 3. Chemistry , 4. English

The courses in Basic Science, taught mostly at the first year level, provide a solid foundation for all the Engineering disciplines. The department strongly believes that a sound and application-oriented knowledge in Basic Science is crucial and in fact, a pre-requisite for the study of any Engineering. The Message of the department centres around this idea and spreads in all possible dimensions.

Short Term Goals

To periodically revise and update the basic science lab curriculum in tune with trends in technology

To Actively involve in periodically revising and upgrading the course content by interacting with and submitting proposals to the policy making bodies of JNTUK.

To build up low cost teaching models in basic science, particularly in physics, to excite interest and accelerate the leaning process of the students.

To prepare necessary charts, transparencies, diagrams, etc., for effective class room instruction using the using smart classroom facilities.

To provide course material in the form of text books and make them available to the students.

To provide a full-fledged online question bank in the subjects of basic science for the benefit of students.

To provide a comprehensive question bank in Basic Science subjects by comparing the syllabi of IITs/NITs and other reputed universities.

To highlight the fundamental concepts of Basic Science and their relevant to Engineering applications.

Long Term Goals

To design and fabricate simple and new experimental techniques and implement them in the lab curriculum and thus provide facilities to the students to realize a concept of open endedness in experiments.

To promote inter disciplinary R & D activity through involving Engineering faculty and submitting proposals to the funding agencies like UGC/DST/AICTE

To introduce PG courses which a blend of Science and Engineering

Co-curricular Calendar
The faculty of basic science play a crucial and effective role in successfully implementing co-curricular activities for the overall personality development of the students.

Co-curricular activities like Aptitude, Ground Discussion, Seminar, Paper presentation, Communicative skills, reading and writing skills, extempore, etc., are appropriately blended in the regular academic time table for all the II & III B.Tech students to infuse self confidence and audacity.

Customization
The department of Basic science together with other departments in VIT and in fact every college in Sri Vishnu Educational Society strongly believes in the customized counseling of the students.
The objective of customization of students is to identify /recognize their areas (Academic/otherwise) of interest and encourage/motivate them in those areas by providing the necessary inputs to realize their goals. Customization is a noble concept introduced in the campus colleges and it is being done very successfully in VIT.

Each student is given a well-designed format and is asked to fill it up will all the necessary student information. A team of the senior faculty members including HODs sit with the students in a room for about 30 minutes and note down the relevant information given by the student. The student is encouraged to freely come out to provide the information regarding his/her interest in the chosen technical field, dreams, goals, civil services Social service etc. After completion of this whole exercise a solid database of all the students is created. Based on this data, a matrix table is designed with certain identified parameters. Each parameter represents a certain area of students’ interest. When once these parameters are identified and fixed, steps are initiated to provide the necessary inputs to the students.

Customized counseling of the students is an ongoing successfully running process in VIT and is beginning to yield very good results.
